Meet the ACT Federal Candidates – Public Forum

Thursday 16 June 2016

Hear the Candidates’ views about:
– what should be the national responsibilities for planning in the ACT; and

– preserving the unique characteristics of Canberra as the nation’s capital.

Questions could cover:
– location of Federal departments in relation to impacts on town centres, employment, transport and parking;

– impact of recent changes to the National Capital Plan;
– heritage listing of Canberra in its overall design concept;
– ACT government projects that affect areas under NCA responsibility such as City to the Lake, Manuka Oval and West Tuggeranong.

Temporary weekend road closures on Flemington Road

Temporary weekend road closures on Flemington Road

Flemington Road will be temporarily closed between Wizard Street and Kate Crace Street in Gungahlin from 7am to 5pm on Saturday 28 May and Sunday 29 May 2016.

The road closures will allow for traffic light conduits to be installed (involving digging trenches) across the Flemington Road intersection, as part of the work to extend Manning Clark Crescent from Flemington Road to Anthony Rolfe Avenue. The upgrade will create convenient alternative routes and better traffic flow around the Gungahlin town centre when completed in September 2016.

Flemington Road will be closed from 7am to 5pm on Saturday 28 May and Sunday 29 May 2016. In the event of bad weather the work will be delayed to the following weekend. Alternative routes during the road closure are via Kate Crace Street, Anthony Rolfe Avenue and Wizard Street, as shown on the map below. Detour signs will be in place to direct traffic. Access via Flemington Road service roads will remain open for local residents.

We remind motorists to drive carefully, obey the speed limits and follow traffic management signs and instructions. We thank residents and road users for their patience.

Horse Park Drive Duplication to Mulligans Flat Road

Horse Park Drive is one of the main arterial roads in
Gungahlin. As our region grows, more and more people are using this road every
day, which links our suburbs to the city and the Majura Parkway.

 

Work has already started on the duplication of Horse Park
Drive between Anthony Rolfe Avenue and Well Station Drive. Since this work
started, many people have asked when the rest of Horse Park Drive will be
duplicated. I have said that as your local MLA and now Minister for Transport
and Municipal Services this is my Number 1 priority.

 

I am very pleased to let you know that we will be
upgrading all of Horse Park Drive from the Federal Highway to Mulligans Flat
Road, and this work will be funded in this year’s ACT Budget!

 

As a Gungahlin resident, and since January 2015 your local
Gungahlin MLA, I have spoken with many people about Gungahlin’s roads. Like
you, I know they need upgrading.

 

I advocated strongly for the duplication of Gundaroo Drive
in my first weeks in the Assembly and that work is now underway. And now Horse
Park Drive will be fully duplicated.

 

I’m pleased to say that we will begin consultation
immediately on the design of that work so that construction can get underway
later in the year. You will receive further information soon, so please keep an
eye out for our regular Gungahlin roads updates.

 

Finally, thank you for your patience during the current road
works around our region. I will continue working hard to make sure our road and
transport network works for our community.

May Road Closures – Manning Clark Crescent, Anthony Rolfe Avenue, Hamer Street

The ACT government have advised there will be road closures as detailed below related to The Valley Ave / Manning Clark Cres extension and Horse Park Drive duplication. These will be distributed to residents nearby the work areas.

· Manning Clark Crescent will be closed in both directions on Saturday 7 May and Saturday 14 May 2016. This closure will enable the construction of new water mains and utility services across Manning Clark Crescent. Pedestrian access will remain open but people may be detoured via a temporary footpath.

· Hamer Street between Mary Gillespie Avenue and Flemington Road will close from Tuesday 17 May 2016 for up to three days. Access will remain open along Hamer Street between Anthony Rolfe Avenue and Mary Gillespie Avenue.

· As part of the final stages of work at the Anthony Rolfe Avenue and Horse Park Drive intersection, an asphalt overlay will be placed. This work will be undertaken on two consecutive nights, between Wednesday 11 and Thursday 19 May 2016 (exact dates are dependent on weather and scheduling). To reduce the impact on traffic the work will take place at night, from 7 pm to 6 am and will not occur over the weekend.

Public Housing Renewal Taskforce – Franklin Update

The ACT government has issued a letter to Franklin residents. The text of the message reads:
 As you are aware, in December last year the Public Housing Renewal Taskforce began discussions with the Franklin community about public housing in the suburb.

The Taskforce had identified two sites next to the Franklin Early Childhood School which might suit new public housing (Blocks 1 and 3 of Section 125).

The Taskforce has consulted widely on their proposal, paying close attention to the views put by the community, and school community in particular. I know that your local member, Meegan Fitzharris MLA, has also been working closely with you to make sure your views are heard. Her representations on your behalf have kept your views at the centre of the Government’s considerations.
As a result of that consultation, I have asked the Taskforce to investigate Block 2 Section 57 (to the south of the school) as the preferred option for new public housing in Franklin. As such, work on both sites next to the School will not proceed.
There is further work to do before we can establish whether the site to the south of the School is suitable, and building there possible. If it is, we will need the community’s help and support during the planning and development application stage to see the project delivered.
I know that, like you and me, the residents of Franklin share the rest of Canberra’s view that a strong public housing program is one of the most important ways we help some of the most vulnerable members of our community. I’m sure you agree that our public housing program helps people take part in – and contribute to – the diverse social life of our city.
I’d like to thank you for engaging with the Taskforce consultation in that spirit. The Taskforce will keep you updated via email, including letting you know about future information sessions.

Temporary Hibberson Street Closure Update

This newsletter serves as a reminder to previous correspondence issued to all key stakeholders within the Gungahlin Town Centre about current changes in place due to the construction of the Hibberson Street underground link. This link will provide a convenient connection between the new 2-level, 505 space undercover carpark to the existing Big W basement car park when the new carpark opens in mid-2016.

Construction of the vehicular link is progressing well and we are on track to re-open Hibberson Street in 4 weeks.
The following key changes will remain in place until Hibberson Street re-opens on Tuesday 8 December:

  • – Hibberson Street closure to vehicular traffic from Gozzard Street to the pedestrian crossing between Woolworths and Big W malls
  • – The U-turning bay on Hibberson Street near the pedestrian crossing to allow vehicular traffic travelling west along Hibberson Street to make a U-turn
  • Current traffic detours around the Town Centre
  • – Hibberson Street closure to pedestrian traffic within the site compound area. Pedestrians are being redirected via The Marketplace Big W mall (through the new entry and the existing main entry) between 5:30am to 12:30am midnight, 7 days per week
  • – The temporary Town Centre Bus Stop on Gozzard Street near the Raiders Club.

Please Note: – Within the Big W mall there is no lift access to Hibberson Street until Hibberson Street re-opens (lift access to Level 1 and the basement car park is still available). If access to street level is required the lift can still be utilised, however customers will need to go to the Lower Ground Level of the Shopping Centre (underground car park), then take the travelator (moving walkway) or the pedestrian ramp to come back up into the mall.

Barton Highway Intersection

In response to a number of queries from residents about the Barton Highway intersection project, the GCC has sought additional information from ACT Roads regarding the decision to opt for signalisation rather than an flyover. In response, ACT Roads have provided a fact sheet describing the constraints of the site, the consideration of a flyover and the signalisation.
