The Gungahlin Community Council is looking forward to the year ahead with a certain amount of interest to see what the change of government might bring to our area. Issues such as public transport; education; road networks; sporting and community facilities; Gold Creak Homestead; employment in the area; Future residential and commercial development, are all on our agenda.

Our first meeting of the year will be devoted to exploring the concept of light rail (trams) in Gungahlin. This meeting is not going to be a debate to establish if we support the concept, but an information session that will hopefully lead to informed discussion, consideration and debate.

For many years people have been talking about light rail and supposedly there has been a lot of work done on considering different options and issues. However when it comes to actually tracking down the information, there seems to be very little documentation available at this time.

When considering a light rail system from Gungahlin to Civic there are several issues that must be addressed. Some of these issues are: What type of light rail system would be the most appropriate? What would it cost? Could the ACT community afford to build and run a light rail system? How would the Gungahlin branch fit in with other proposed branches to Belconnen, Woden etc? What route would be the most suitable? What would be a suitable timeframe for developing a light rail system? These questions are some that I can think of without knowing much about any proposals that have already been considered.

The GCC will be hosting a public meeting to provide the Gungahlin community, and other interested parties, with information about light rail. The meeting will be held on the 13th February 2002 at the Gungahlin Resource Centre.

The proposed format for the meeting will be:

  • 7.30pm to 8pm - Introduction and video information.
  • 8pm to 9pm - Guest speakers and stakeholder representatives including: Government spokesperson; Opposition spokesperson; PALM; EPIC; Mitchell traders; GDA; PACTT; Developers; The Conservation Council and Action Bus Service.

Note – The time allowance for each speaker will be the same (approximately 5 minutes), with question time between 9pm to 9.30pm.

Although the Gungahlin Community Council is hosting this meeting, Council members have not discussed light rail at any other public meeting.

If you are aware of any person or organisation that is able to contribute information, which may be suitable for use at this information session, please ask them to contact me. Ian Ruecroft 6242 9444 or 041 7272 019.
